I recently finished a fascinating and challenging book - “The Year of Living Biblically“, by A. J. Jacobs. (more…)

The wisdom of Terry Pratchett

So, I’m in the middle of my annual re-reading of Hogfather; and as an early Hogswatch gift, and because I can’t think of a better tribute to the Master in light of the recent news, I thought I’d share a couple of the (many) choice little gems in what I consider to be his most [...]

The words we live by

I’m a constant reader, and have been since age 4. Over that time I’ve read fiction and fact, great literature, absolute dreck, and a whole bunch of stuff in between. I was thinking about my lifelong love affair with the printed word the other day, after re-reading this Sinfest strip, and I realized how much [...]

I am in the middle of a fantastic book on a subject near and dear to my heart (and hands!) - the spiritual dimension of craft. The book is Grain of Truth: the Ancient Lessons of Craft, by Ross A. Laird, and it is possibly one of the best books I have ever read [...]

Book pile

A blogging e-list I’m on has spawned this meme for its members - show us a picture of the books you’re currently reading. My little stack is kind of sad next to some I’ve seen, mainly because I don’t tend to read a whole bunch of books at the same time (and it’s also a [...]

(And I’m going to add another step: put a couple [...]

What’cha readin’?

The next post is taking longer than I expected… particularly since I just found out Slade tagged me for his Money meme, and so now I’m thinking about that as well.
So in the interim, I’ll take the cheap way out and ask everybody to tell me about what they’re reading, and why. (more…)

Non-Hellenic and general pagan
Ludmila Zeman: Gilgamesh the King, The Revenge of Ishtar and The Last Quest of GilgameshI can’t say enough about these books - they’re just amazing. Ms. Zeman did extensive research into ancient Babylonian art; when she sent a draft of the first volume to the British Museum to have it checked for [...]

These are some of the best pagan-oriented children’s books that we’ve found. There are many, many retellings of individual myths, of course, but some care needs to be taken in choosing just the right volume. When judging a book I haven’t seen before, I usually start at the beginning - far too many mythology story [...]
