This is the first time I’ve posted about anything even remotely political on this blog; that’s not why we’re here. Sometimes, though, you just gotta speak up. After reading the increasingly shrill rhetoric on various news and political comboxes regarding the UU shootings, and the blame (or lack thereof) that various people want to attach to the right-wing commentators that the shooter was apparently reading, I decided to go to the source and see what Hannity, O’Reilly and Savage had to say on their official websites (I checked out Coulter and Rush, too, just for the heck of it).
They say nothing. Not one of their sites even mentions the shooting (although one of them gives a fair amount of space to a man who attacked a Christian radio station, but didn’t actually end up hurting anybody except himself). Not only is there no commentary, the story isn’t even listed in the newsfeeds that most of their websites have up.
Now, I’m not joining the small but vocal chorus of people who hold these… commentators… responsible for the shooter’s actions – that responsibility belongs to the shooter alone – but it’s not unreasonable, under the circumstances, to assume that the climate of fear and hate that these people are paid to promote may have had an influence on his judgement; but not a word do they speak.
Not one word.
