Fascinating serial Shinto novel

I’ve recently started following a very interesting Shinto-based horror/fantasy novel – Tamao, by David Chart – that the author is publishing in short daily chunks on his website. Tamao is (so far, at least :) the story of a modern young woman who is driven into the service of the kami of her local shrine, and gets caught up in a struggle for power that appears to be taking place in both the spiritual and physical realms. The writing is solidly entertaining, and while the pacing is of necessity somewhat episodic, so often was Dickens (and for the same reason)… and in addition to lots of lovely tension and spookiness, I’m getting some new insights into Shinto practice and theology as well!

If you like a good fantasy story, I recommend checking out “Tamao” – you can start with the first installment here.
